All the Super Bowl Movie Trailers: What's Coming and Why Do We Care?
Super Bowl LII was an absolutely jam-packed evening complete with great commercials, an entertaining halftime show featuring Justin Timberlake, and, oh yeah, there was an amazing football game from start to finish. The night was also the platform for many production companies to roll out their latest movie trailers. Here's what we saw and why we should care:
Avengers: Infinity War
Why should we care? - Are you kidding me? Why the heck wouldn't we care about this? It's the culmination of 18 Marvel films that FINALLY officially introduces the biggest bad, Thanos. We've been waiting for this since the after credits of the first Avengers film and I personally couldn't be more excited!
Mission: Impossible - Fallout
Why should we care? - Well as someone who hasn't really been into the Mission Impossible series as of late, I can say I honestly didn't really care when I heard there would be yet another Mission Impossible film. However, they did run this shortened teaser that then got me to watch the full trailer and I must say, I am certainly intrigued. It was a very well put together trailer that may have even roped me back into the franchise. Time will tell if this one can hold up to the hype the trailer has provided.
Why should we care? - Okay, out of all the trailers during the Super Bowl, this one caught me the most off-guard. When it opened, I honestly thought we were just getting another scene from Dwayne Johnson's upcoming film Rampage. But alas, I was duped! Yep, that's right folks, Dwayne Johnson is starring in yet another over-the-top action-packed flick that looks like a fancy repackaging of Die Hard. If you love Dwayne Johnson, you'll care about this. However, aside from the draw of him as lead, this may be one I'll be staying away from.
The Cloverfield Paradox
Why should we care? - This one is huge. Even if you aren't a fan of the Cloverfield world they have built, the execution of this trailer and the instantaneous release mere hours later is an absolute game changer for the industry. There was absolutely ZERO marketing done for this film other than this Super Bowl trailer! Just learning about it is a surprise in itself, but to release it for viewing immediately after telling people it exists is an incredibly bold move that I LOVE. Netlfix continues to reward its members with gems like this and that's why you should certainly care about this one.
Solo: A Star Wars Story
Why should I care? - Well, for starters, Star Wars. If that wasn't enough for you, realizing you'll be getting the backstory to one of Star Wars most enjoyable and likable characters should do the trick. While it is yet another flashback story that will do nothing to advance the story in the current timeline, there is proof that these type of world building stories can be well received. Rogue One was a perfect example of a story that we didn't necessarily need, but after seeing it, I was glad I got to see it. I believe this one will also fall in that category, and that's not a bad thing at all.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
Why should we care? - Well, I guess the same tactic could be used on this one... Jurassic World, that's why. However, I will say I have heard more and more people wearing thin on the direction of the Jurassic Park franchise. But call me a sucker because if you put dinosaurs in a movie, I'll be in the theaters to consume them. While I will admit, some of the decisions in Jurassic World baffled me, I do still hold out hope they can turn it around. It looks like they may take some more time and develop a character or two (PLEASE) based off of this trailer, but yet another "created" dinosaur may rub people the wrong way. As always, I'll have have high hopes with the franchise, lets just hope they can deliver.
A Quiet Place
Why should we care? - As a fan of John Krasinksi, A Quiet Place caught my attention, especially if you've seen the trailer in a movie theater. The concept behind this thriller is unique and I am definitely excited to see how it turns out. This trailer did give us a little more info on the world they're living in with the news, but I am very curious as to how the world has come to this. Also, what the heck is hunting them?! I'm really looking forward to this one.
